How to Buy a Computer?

When you’re in the market for a new computer, you’ve literally got millions of possible options. In this guide, I’ll hopefully offer a little insight into the world of electronics purchasing by breaking it down into a few things to consider.

Before beginning to go into detail over buying a new computer, I should tell you something important right off the bat. Technology, like computers, printers, etc. are always getting better and having new features added to them. This means that the longer you wait to buy, the more features you’re getting (for a possibly lower price). For example, I bought a $1000 laptop over a year ago. Checking the BestBuy flyer, I now know that I could have gotten a comparable computer for as low as $600.

So, here’s a number of things to consider when buying a computer:

Budget. How much money you want to spend is probably the biggest factor in your new purchase. I’ve seen computers as cheap as $250. A decent computer will cost about $500 to $600. A high end computer will cost over $1000 but will come with many great features. Just a quick note: the less you spend on a computer, the less reliable it generally will be. My grandma bought a $300 computer only to have it break in just over a year. I would recommend spending about $600 to $750.

Form factor. This is another big question you need to ask yourself. You basically have two options here: desktop or laptop. Desktop computers are generally less expensive, but laptops (also known as notebooks) are much more portable. Because notebooks are becoming just as powerful as desktops for a comparable price, I would recommend getting a laptop.

Operating system. You’ve got a few options here also. The majority of computers sold today come with a version of the Windows operating system, but Macs are becoming very popular for their ease of use. A Mac is much more expensive, though. If you’re a big do-it-yourself type person, you could try an open-source operating system like a Linux distribution.

Manufacturer. There are many companies that build computers. I’m a big fan of Hewlett-Packard, but there’s also Sony, Gateway, Dell, and numerous others. If you want the Mac OS, you’ll need to buy an Apple.

How to buy. You can buy a computer right off the shelves at a store or you can order one online. If you order one, you can customize it to your preference, although many stores have a wide range of selection to meet your needs.

There are many things to consider when buying a new computer, but I’ve covered many of the major areas. Hopefully you’ll find a computer that suits your needs!
